How to choose a social media talent agency in 2026

By the EmpireX editorial team

Creator management has very low barriers to entry. Anyone can build a landing page, list logos and send a DM offering representation, which is exactly why the selection process has to be yours rather than theirs.

Use this as a checklist. If an agency cannot answer most of it clearly on a first call, that is your answer.

1. Look at the roster, not the logos

Brand logos on a website tell you a campaign happened once. The roster tells you who the agency is genuinely set up to serve.

Look for creators in a comparable size band and a comparable category to you. An agency built for gaming does not automatically translate to lifestyle, and a roster of eight-figure accounts may not have a plan for a creator at 80,000 followers.

2. Test the brand relationships

Ask which brands in your category they have worked with in the last twelve months, and what those campaigns involved. Specifics come easily to teams doing the work.

Also ask about renewals. One-off campaigns are easy to win once; partnerships that come back are evidence a team delivers.

3. Ask what happens in month one

A serious team will describe a process: an audit of your channels and past deals, a positioning and rate card, a pitch list, then outreach. A weak team will describe a feeling.

4. Check who actually manages you

You will often be pitched by a founder and managed by someone else. That is fine, as long as you meet that person before you sign and know how many other creators they hold.

5. Read the contract for exits, not entrances

  • Initial term and notice period
  • Exclusivity and whether direct deals are still allowed
  • Sunset commission after termination
  • Who owns the content and the usage rights granted to brands
  • Payment flow and how quickly money reaches you

6. Ask how you will be reported to

You should be able to see pipeline, closed deals, invoices raised and money received without asking. Vague reporting is usually a proxy for vague activity.

Red flags

  • A meaningful upfront fee for representation
  • Pressure to sign on the call
  • No named contact for your day-to-day management
  • Guaranteed income or guaranteed follower growth
  • Contracts with no exit before several years
  • Refusal to put scope and commission definitions in writing

Where EmpireX sits

EmpireX is a creator and talent management agency working with talent across the US and internationally, covering brand partnerships, content strategy, distribution and monetization.

If you want to see whether the fit is right, send an enquiry and we will talk through where you are now and what the first 90 days would realistically look like.

The EmpireX perspective

Creators should spend their time making great content, not managing every upload. EmpireX brings content distribution, talent management and brand partnerships together: reviewing the catalog, adapting the strongest moments, publishing for each platform and reporting what actually works.

Common questions

How big do I need to be to sign with a talent agency?

There is no universal threshold. Engagement, consistency of output and how well an audience matches a brand category often matter more to a partner than raw follower count.

Can I work with more than one agency?

It depends entirely on the exclusivity terms you sign. Non-exclusive arrangements exist, but most full-service management is exclusive for the term.
